Before my husband and I decided to start a family, we sat down and crunched the numbers to make sure we could afford being a single income family. It looked good on paper, but once I quit my job, I was having a hard time adjusting to only one income. I was used to being able to buy what I wanted, most of the time without giving it a second thought. And this was now my problem; I was shopping like we still had two incomes. I was clipping coupons even when I was working a full-time job, but now I couldn’t buy something just because I had a coupon for it. I had to come to the realization that unless something was free, I couldn’t spend money on a non-necessity, even if it was a great deal. It’s hard to say no sometimes, but I tell myself, ‘that’s an extra $2 we still have in our bank account.’ Sure it’s a small amount, but it adds up.
